Pre-Consultation Preparation
Note any feeding difficulties, speech issues, or oral restrictions that may indicate a tongue or lip tie.
Be ready to share birth details, feeding history, and any prior evaluations or treatments. If you are able to obtain a copy of any notes, please have those sent to tongueties@highhhousepedo.com. Note: Previous breastfeeding support is not required, but highly recommended.
Write down any concerns about the procedure, recovery, or long-term outcomes.
There is a lot of background information that may help to answer questions, or make the diagnositic visit more familiar. Some of our favorites:
An article for parents that talks about why tongue-tie is beneficial for some, but not all infants (Dr. Ray was a contributing author) – click here.
Heavier and more technical, the North Carolina Tongue Tie Center follows these guidelines for management of tongue-tie in infants, children and adolescents – click here.
Babies under 6 months of age are required to have the intra-muscular vitamin K shot that is routinely given at birth to qualify for frenectomy surgery. If your baby has not received the shot, you may wait until after you have determined that your baby needs surgery. If so, we can help find a place to have the vitamin K shot administered. Vitamin K drops are not sufficient for this procedure.
Call (984) 884-7983 or use our online form to request an appointment, which can be found here.
NC Tongue Tie Center utilizes a CO2 laser for all frenectomy surgeries – we do not use scissor frenectomies.
Per our liability insurance, parents and other untrained personnel are not allowed in the room during treatment time. Parents and guests will wait in the waiting room, and should expect to be apart from their child for 2-5 minutes depending on the number of sites needing frenectomy, and the clinical anatomy of said ties. This policy is not negotiable.
In some instances, frenectomy surgeries are scheduled in combination with oral conscious sedation (child is awake, breathing on their own) or general anesthesia (child is asleep, may or may not be intubated, breathing on own with computer backup). Parents and other untrained personnel are not allowed to be in the treatment room during the time of sedation or surgery. This policy is not negotiable.

High House Pediatric Dentistry and NC Tongue Tie Center Vaccination Policy
High House Pediatric Dentistry and NC Tongue Tie Center Vaccination Policy

In order to ensure a safe and healthy clinical environment for all patients, families, and team members, High House Pediatric Dentistry and the NC Tongue Tie Center require adherence to the following vaccination standards for all pediatric patients over the age of 2 months. Babies who are being treated for ankyloglossia/tongue-tie only need to have their Vitamin K shot prior to surgery.
At High House Pediatric Dentistry, we understand that changes in healthcare policies can raise questions. One common question we hear is “Why are you implementing a vaccination policy now, when this wasn’t required 13 years ago when you opened? Has that much changed?”
Another common question is “What is the rationale for your current vaccination policy?”
1. The flu or COVID vaccine is excluded from this policy, although highly encouraged. Children with a fever are asked to re-schedule and may not be seen at the doctor’s discretion until the fever, and other signs of sickness have subsided.
2. For current patients who have not been vaccinated, the practice will honor currently scheduled appointments but will not provide additional appointments or treatments, except for emergency care for 30 days.
3. Scheduling future appointments will be contingent on the child being brought up to date on vaccinations, or documentation (delayed schedule, medical exemption) is provided for review- a final decision will be up to the practice owner. If parents have chosen to seek care elsewhere and notify us, we can help with records transfer.
4. The practice intake and information update forms have been revised to include questions about vaccinations to verify vaccination status. The practice reserves the right to request additional documentation to clarify status.
Your acceptance of this vaccination policy is required for continued care at High House Pediatric Dentistry and the North Carolina Tongue Tie Center. We are happy to discuss concerns, and modify appointment scheduling if appropriate.
